Mindset is a set of ideas and attitude that shape the way someone thinks about themselves and around the world; It is primarily based on whether they can be developed or Fixed. A person with a fixed Mindset believes that his intelligence and personalities are fixed traits that cannot be developed whereas one with a Growing Mindset believes with good effort, personalities and intelligence can grow with experience. Someone with a fixed mindset might take criticism very personally but one with a growth mindset accepts and appreciate criticism and advice since its an opportunity to expand their education. I believe a person with a growth mindset perform better and are favoured to succed at life than one with a fixed mindset because he/she is able to embrace mistakes, work harder and accept challenges. ". I have observed that students who see failure as a setback does not always do well in school. They create that mindset that a particular course or subject is beyond them. In a recent article, Natesa, A NMSA senior talks about how "failure is taught as an important part to sucess". She encouraged teacher to teach students that it is okay to make mistakes. In Teaching Students to Embrace Mistakes, she encourages students that "Failure isn’t the end of the road. You learn from failure. It gives you more information on how to do something better. These are some characteristics that one with a growth mindset should posess. The ability to take risks and provide feedbacks when needed. People who believe that they can increase their intelligence through effort and challenge actually get smarter and do better in school, work, and life over time. They know that mental exercise makes their brains grow smarter—the same way that exercise makes an athlete stronger and faster. And they are always learning new ways to work smart and build their brains. Teachers and parents too play a role in the mindset of students. In the article Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research, Carol Dweck Says (Barshay); the author support the idea of professor Carol Dweck that "parents and teachers misunderstand and misapply the concepts of Growth Mindset"(Barshay). She believes that "through effort and focus, people can improve their skills and abilities". She also advises that "rather than praising kids for a good work, it is better to praise their effort and processes and tie them to their outcome". By doing that, she believes it "enhances student’s motivation to learn by changing their beliefs about intelligence". The view that telling they are smart or intelligent will raise their self esteem but often back fires because they feel down and want to give up every time they fail. She believe that "students who see intelligence as fixed always worry about how much intelligence they actually have. Dweck found out that "students who had a growth mindset perform better in school and if they dedicate themselves to do better they can succeed". She introduces a phenomenon she calls "false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset". An education writerr Alfie Kohn, discourages the Idea of a Growth Mindset. He rather argues that that there is something wrong with how the idea of Growth Mindset has been used". He believes Kids should have mindset adjustment and the real problem is more about how the system focuses on mindset which tend to discourage people from making changes". In his article, he criticizes this idea that in the right context, shows promise: "…like the buzz over the related concept known as “grit” (a form of self-discipline involving long-term persistence), there’s something disconcerting about how the idea [of growth mindset] has been used — and about the broader assumption that what students most need is a "Mindset" adjustment". I strongly disagree with Alfie kohn because I believe students have control over their own learning and abilities. No teacher wants to fail a student and no institution tends to make system bad for students. If you fixed your mind to a perception that the system is rigged, you avoid the challenges and builds a very fixed mindset. You should always be willing to accept the challenges and work harder to yeild better results. Until very recently, I’ve had a fixed mindset about math because of what I believed about my own intelligence and ability to learn. I started to focus more on the courses i had problems with. I believe intelligence is something you have to work for. That is why i tend to ask questions whenever I feel lost in class cause i know there is no such thing as a stupid question. My psychology as a student makes me think of myself as a person who wants to learn and learn successfully.. I'm aware of my strength and weaknesses so I focus more on my weak areas; like for example, since I'm not so good at writing, I spend more time on my blog assignments. I seek help from the study group and assistants we have on campus. I challenge myself everyday to do better and get better. I try to avoid distractions and put in extra effort towards my work. When I have problem understanding a particular topic, I try to seek help from my classmates and teachers. I also make a lot of research online to enhance my knowledge on what's going on around the world. I always anticipate and prepare myself for changing expectations. Like Carol Dweck, I believe that with hard work and determination one can suceed in anything he does. Nearly everyone can identify a place that brings contentedness but this doesnt mean the prompt isnt challenging. This place can be a small village in the West coast of Africa or the hot long beaches on the coast of Hawai. It can be one's bedroom, classroom or a secret room in your where you have that peace and quiteness.
I wondered what's its like to live on the other side of the world. Are the people friendly? Will i fit in? Do i need to be worried about the way I speak? A new place, city, climate? I will not be on my soccer team anymore. We have a championship game coming up and I know coach Pele cannot win that game without me. I won't take Mom to the market on Sundays anymore. Those cassava leaf stew she prepared for us on sundays. Oh how she will miss us so badly. She will be lonely in this big house. We wont make those Lake piso trips on the holidays. These thoughts were running through my mind for the last weekend. Moving to the United states was like a nightmare. I would wake up hoping that the day will not come soon because i could not face the thought of leaving my family and friends. My new home is a beautiful city withnice people. It's been a year and i never thought i would adapt so quickly. Nice weather and many great opportunities to make a better life. I have made many friends and minimize the cultural shock when i just came. Even though I miss my home, I've come to realize that im in a new home and no matter what culture or society shift you will encounter in your life, the best you could do is to "adapt to your surroundings in order to survive". About Carol Dweck article, I prefer to think I have a Growth Mindset to that of a fixed Mindset.I understand that intelligence is something that you can increase. I care about learning and willing to work hard. I believe if one want to do want to do well, he or she must always think it’s more important to learn than to always score well. This is what we call the “growth mindset.” When i was in college back in Africa, we always had instructors who after taking an exam would point out the students who got the best grades for the test. I would always be called out for the science courses but never for the Math courses. Infact my father would always tell me during study hours at home that he had similar problems with math back in high school so it seemed like a generational trait. I already had enough forces telling me that I was really no good at math anyway, so to avoid feeling dumb, I ran the other way. My psychology as a student makes me think of myself as a person who wants to learn and learn successfully believe with dedication and hard work, one can accomplish the impossible. I relate this to how I go about my daily life working as a full time EMT and a college student. As a Fresher in my field of work, I put myself always in the position to learn. I attempt to be more proficient in what I do and know about the various processes which form my Job. I aim to learn from my supervisors and coworkers and always willing to accept my mistakes. In school I pretty much try to do the same. Never afraid to fail because I believe failures are opportunities that help improve future efforts"(Carol Dweck). I set goals in everything I do; it motivates me to work harder. My goal is to graduate from college as a nurse. I will work harder, study and put in the time to accomplish my goals. Like Carol Dweck, I believe that with hard work and determination one can suceed in anything he does. If you are not ready in five minutes, we are about to leave. The scent of the cassava leaf stew had filled the air as I raced down to my closet to grab my shirts and shorts she had ironed earlier that day. I quickly ran down the stairs to help with the meat sandwich she prepared for the trip.. My cousins, aunts and uncles had all gathered outside. They were dressed in their casual wear and helping with the food. I felt the excitement in their voice and smiles on their faces as they talked about the trip.
The first weekend of January, a family holiday where we all gathered to celebrate the new year. This year we were taking a trip to lake PISO in the suburban part of Liberia. It was a beautiful day; the sky was clear and blue and birds were singing. I felt the sun smiling at me which reflected the light so that rays spread out in all directions. I always enjoyed the days spent with the family. Uncle Joe, the funniest person I've ever seen was chasing us with a scarecrow mask on his face. I am going to take you to the boogeyman he screamed as he raced behind us. We all love Uncle Joe, as he would made us laugh everytime he came to visit. It is time for us to go now mom said as she walked towards the bus. I quickly hop in the back of the bus so I could get a window seat. It was a one hour drive away and the bus was fill with my family all singing and humming to the African traditional music on the radio. We all screamed to the music as the bus raced down the highway. Open the window, so we can feel the breeze on our face my cousin shouted from the back of the bus. As I quickly brought the glass down, I could smell the fresh geen grass and the blossoming fruits on the trees. Beneath the trees grew some kind of lush, wet bushy vegetation with silver lit leaves and stems here and there. My heart started to beat faster as it was one the most beautiful sights I have seen. Now we had reached on the lake, my heart raced even more faster. The palm trees dancing to the wind and the calmness of the water as it peacefully flows over to the bank of the lake. The smell of the fresh water fill the air. I rushed out of the bus and could feel the cool wind on my face as I raced down to the shore of the lake. I saw parents playing in the lake with their children. Other families had come to visit. My uncles were preparing the tents we brought for the trip. I couldn’t help but notice the canoes that were lying on the shores of the sand. "Ma, can we get a ride in the canoes i shouted as i raced down the water". "Not until you help your uncles setup the tents she shouted". I ran down to my cousin to tell them about the news and they were all excited. I could see my mom and Aunts preparing the food we had brought from the house. I remembered the beene seeds (sesame), eggplant, okra, and beans. There was music and laughter in the air and the feeling of the hot sand under my feet. All I could think of now was to play in water. I quickly put on my shorts and we ran to the lake. "Did you bring the soccer ball from the attic", I asked my cousin. "It's in the car", he replied. "We should make stick poles and played a quick game of soccer" i suggested; "Not until we take a ride in the canoe first" he proclaimed. But Mom advised us not to go too far i told him, so we raced down towards the canoe. "You'll have to wait for the others" by older cousin told us just as we were about to get in. They were stiil wearing their swimsuits to get in the water. So we ran back to grab the ball from the bus. We should play with the ball in the water i suggested. The water felt warm as we jump up and down with the ball been thrown at each other. My older cousins gather sticks so they could make a goal post to play soccer. Now everyone was dressed up in their swimwears. Near the canoes, I was so excited that I could feel my heart beating fast as if it were about to explode. It was my first time being in a canoe. We all line up to take turns because there wasn’t enough space for the ten of us. It was the best feeling ever. I remember placing my hands in the water as we raced across the lake to the other side. Make sure you hold on to the canoe tightly my older cousin advised us. We placed our hands in the water as it the canoe rowed across the other side of the lake. Row, row row your boat we all yelled as we paddled along the river banks. One funny incident was when we paddled around a corner of some mangrove trees when we came across a big sign that said" no swimming beyond this point". We all got scared and started screaming before my cousin told us we would not crossed the sign. We paddled across to the other side and got to the shore. It was finally time to eat and we walked towards the tents. My aunt Chuku was setting up the plates for the food. My uncle had set up a big fire with wooden sticks he gathered from the branches off the trees. He had alredy started grilling some ribs and chicken over the fire. My mom making Fufu(cornmeal) and GB(Njama njama) to go with the Grilled ribs and chicken. There was okra stew, sausages, fresh beef and garlic with a big jug of ice coconut Juice. We all sat on the sands with our plates in our hands. It felt wonderful as Mom said grace and we were about to eat. There were several varieties of chicken-Hen,rooster and the regular (soft chicken). I like the hen better because it taste delicious when grilled. It was the most tantalizing dish ever. As the sun sets, we gathered our things to get going. My heart was filled with joy because I knew I had the best time of my life. I remember those moments like it just happened yesterday. I know I can never go back to those days. Those days as a child that didn’t care about all the bad things in the world. Nowadys we all live in different parts of the world. We only see sometimes once in a year. The days I had with my family that I can never have back. I’m in a better place now and a better environment but I will never forget those days. Those memories taught me that being a family means you are part of something very wonderful. It means you will love and be loved no matter what for the rest of your life. In this blog, I will answer questions about this episode and how it relates to our class and the work we've done so far.
Question #1: How does this episode fit into the narrative mode? This episode is basically narrating a story about the life of Francis Mallman, how he is defined by his freedom and leading a team of people in his cooking adventures. The episode recaps scenes where Francis Mallman tells us about his life as a chef, his family and mother of his child who lives a country away and they only see each other for like eight to ten days a month; and later shows a scene where he is seen spending time with his family. Throughout the episode, the narrator not only tells the story of Mallman but also support it by showing his viewers what is happening. Question #2: How does Mallmann's story connect to the hiraeth story you are writing in this class? Consider his discussions about home and childhood Mallman story in the episode connect to my story in a way that it reflects on a home he cannot return to. In a scene , he is picture sitting in his kitchen making his coffee on a stove on a remote island of "Patagonia". His main idea is about being free and able to connect and travel around the world. At one point Mallman notes, "there is nothing more sad than an overcooked fish". That freedom to fish and bake it in clay and eat it semi raw is as almost he wants to recreate the memories he had as a child and the feeling of a home he cannot return to. Question #3: What major ideas/themes from this episode connect to ideas/themes from our composition course? Consider Mallman's argument about composing a good dish, examining his life environments, and being productive Mallman believes that wherever and whenever you can make a fire, you can make a meal. His main idea is that he cook with what happens to be there at the time not what he wants to be there. He believes in freedom and the ability to connect and travel around the world. It connect to our composition course in a way like Mallman who struggles to balance self -realization in his career with spending time with his family; it inspires us to balance achieving our goal in the class such as (becoming a better writer) with the challenges we face when we tend to write. Conference Reflection.
During our conference with Dr. Sabatino Mangini, we discussed about the Blog post and how we can revise our drafts until the end of the semester. Most importantly, we reviewed some questions to serve as part of a self reflection of the quality of work we've done so far and how we can improve on the grades we contend to have earned. Some of these questions addressed were as follows: 1. Do you initiate working and learning most or all of the time in this class, or does (Professor Mangini) have to push you a lot? 2. Do you take risks and try challenging tasks in this class even if you make mistakes (and learn from them). Or do you "play it safe" most of the time? 3. Do you try to teach other students if you understand something more than they do? Do you just give them the answer, or do you help them learn? Or do you only focus on your own work and ignore students who need help? 4. When you don't feel like doing the assignment, most of the time do you do your best anyway, or do you try to put it off and/or not do your best? During our discussion, we talked about my answers to these questions and how it reflected on the grade I've earned in the class. Answering these questions not only made me realized that I had not put in the time and effort needed to get a grade I expected for the course but also understand how I could work to improve my grades before the end of the semester. Throughout the conference, Dr. Mangini encouraged me that I could do better and pointed out some of the flaws that he thought I needed to address. Some of the main take away were revising my work more often, meeting deadlines and putting enough time to my work. We also talked about how I could work on creating links for my blog, limiting capitalizing and punctuation and work on commenting on other classmates work. I found this very helpful because as a writer I believed these questions and tips will help me improve my writing. Some of the ways that I believe I could improve is to at least try to revise and edit my work everyday and avoiding bland phrases and punctuations. Composing smooth transitions so that my readers can easily read through. I also plan to make sure I have a schedule to work with and meet with a tutor to get more frequent in using the weebly website. I will also work on commenting on my classmates work. Overtime I've seen a bit improvement in my writing and I will continue to write more frequent and seek questions from my instructor when I need to. Who did I work with to compose my project? Was this a good approach? I worked alone when I writing my project. It was a great approach because I was able to completely understand how to compose my work and better focus on how I could improve my writing. In order to be a great writer, i believe one have to learn to work independently. What was the most difficult part of my writing process? Why? What did I do to overcome the obstacles? The most difficult part was to choose a topic from the list and create a thesis statement from it. Making up the introduction was hard because I had to compose and let my readers understand what I was writing about. When and where did I write this project? Good approach? I wrote every time i had a free time from work or school. I believe this was a good approach because it allowed me to do a lot of freewriting and most especially I could freely express my thoughts in the given time frame. Even though, when i was about to transfer my work in word document, I could not find the paper i had wrote on, I was still able to recover some of those thoughts and make the deadline for my paper. I did all my writings in my backyard because it is quiet and allows me to think properly. How will I adapt/revise my writing process for future revision of this project? I will tend to make more revisions and editing on my work. I will try to be more puncture and make sure I'm writing ahead in order to make my assignments deadline. I will also try to review all of my writings everyday so I could note changes I have to make. Najah Yakpasuo
ENG 100 Assignment #3: Film based assignment Due: Draft #1 posted to blog by 11:59 pm on 3/23 In what ways, if any, does America exploit children. In the movie Slumdog Millionaire, the screenwriter Simon Beaufoy shares the story of three Indian children Jamal, Latika, and Salim who grew up in the slums of Indian neighborhood. Jamal is the main character who managed to gain a spot on the TV show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. In the movie, the main character Jamal reflects on flashbacks about his experience and how it relates to him answering questions on the show. The movie also reflects on Jamal's childhood friend who was abducted by a Gangster named Maman who intend forced her at a young age into prostitution. Sexual exploitation is a Global issue in America and around the world. Research has shown that over the past years, children exploitation have grown vastly in America and not much is done by both parents, Government and society as a whole in helping to end this scourge. According to the national center for missing and exploited children in 2016, http://www.missingkids.org/, 58,000 children including girls, boys and LGBQT youths have been sexually exploited since 2016. The number tend to increase within the years and there is little that is done to stop it. Few years later in the movie, a screen reveals when Jamal and Malik set out to look for Latika after she was taken in by Mamam. It shows Jamal asking a lady about the whereabouts of Latika who with the look on her face (one could tell she might have had an idea of who Latika was but refuse to say). Another part shows when Jamal leaves a restaurant, he sees a blind boy begging in the subway. It was the same boy from his past who was blinded by Mamam the Gangsta earlier. When he is asked about Latika whereabouts, the boy shows Jamal a popular street( cherry street) which is clearly a prostitution district known by everyone. Men old enough to parent these kids pay huge sum as indicated in the film to have sex with these kids. They even pay a higher price for the kids who are virgin. This relates to how some streets here in the United states have popular strip Clubs and Bars that teenage children are found visiting. Not very much is done to regulate the activities that goes on around these bars. According to the American society for the positive care of children, http://americanspcc.org/, vast majority of the abuse of children are done by their own Family Members. We see evidence of that on television shows like "The Maury Show "and The Steve Wilikos show, where young boys and girls are sometimes sexually abuse by their own parents. Parents sometimes might suspect a child is being abuse but fails to report it out of fear. It is sometimes observe for years in a home. Just in the news article about a week ago, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/, a story about a 15 year old girl who was gang raped by five or six males on a Facebook live stream reported she has been receiving threats from her community.
